A beer for Stalin
A beverage plant in the Russian city of Volgograd has released beer picturing Josef Stalin in honor of the 65th anniversary of the Victory in World War II. The portrait is flanked with the phrase “Our cause is right – We have triumphed.” The release of beer has raised discussions in Russian society, as the attitude to him varies from admiration to blame for his known cruelty. An estimated 30 million people died as a result of Stalinist repressions and widespread famine in the 1930s. Boris Izgarshev, director of the Pivovar plant producing the beverages, saw nothing wrong with putting Stalin’s picture on a the beer. “Stalin's name is closely connected with the Volgograd soil. The battle of Stalingrad was a turning point in World War II and it was Stalin who played a major role in winning the War. Of course, we expect a negative wave from social organizations and some veterans, but there will be a demand to have this drink,” he said.
